Tools to Make Bulb Planting Easier

Bulbs are easy to grow because everything you need to produce beautiful flowers is contained within the bulb itself. However, if you have a number of bulbs to plant you may not be looking forward to digging loads of holes, so why not invest in one of the tools designed to help.
Small Hand Bulb Planter
The most common bulb planting tool is the bulb planter. Just push the planter into the soil to the required planting depth and then remove the planter. The planter will remove a core of soil with it as you remove it from the ground. Place the bulb in the hole and then push the soil back into the hole. Some bulb planters are spring loaded, they have a button on the side of the planter. Once pushed this will release the soil in the bulb planter which you can use use to cover the bulb. These bulb planters are ideal for daffodil and tulip bulbs.

Long Handled Bulb Planter
Similar to the bulb planter above is the long handled bulb planter. The main benefit of this is that it will save you kneeling or bending as much when you are planting your bulbs. They have a tread on them, a bit like a spade, so you can push down into the soil with your foot and put your weight behind it so you may find this easier in heavier soils. They are also a better option if you don't have a lot of strength in your hands.

Bulb Planting Auger
If you have lots of bulbs or very hard soil you could use a bulb auger. Bulb augers are a specially designed drill bit that you can attach to your cordless or electric drill. You then use this to drill holes into the soil. They come in various diameters so you can choose the size relevant to the size of the bulb you are planting. There are also short and long versions. The longer versions will save you bending so much.
